General information on Cambodia:

After the invasion of Phnom Penh by the Communist Khmer Rouge armed forces in 1975 the evacuation of all cities and towns was ordered.

Over 1 million deported people were killed following summary execution or put into concentration camps.

Three years later the invasion of the Vietnamese forced the Khmer Rouge to take refuge in the countryside.

However the UN in 1993 implemented a coalition government and, in 1998, helped restore stability and the surrender of remaining Khmer Rouge forces.
